
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Sao Paulo in 1952. He began studied with Olivier Toni, Conrado Silva and Cláudio Santoro. In 1979, Santoro conducted the premiere of the first orchestral work by Souza, Variations on a Theme by Cláudio Santoro. He received his Master’s Degree from USP and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. He was awarded the Lei Sarney Award in 1988 for his work Galáxias, the Vitae Composition Grant in 1990 for the composition of Tristes Tropiques and Yage-Aspekte Prize in Salzsburg for Serenata. From 1984 to 1996, with Gilberto Mendes, he directed the New Music Festival (SP). In 1991, he presented in U.S. and Canada his Tristes Tropiques. In 1992, represented Brazil at Sound Celebration II, promoted by the Louisville Orchestra. In 1996, at Sonidos de las Americas Festival, he performed at Carnegie Hall the premiere of his Chiaroscuro. He was professor at Federal University of Paraná, and is currently professor at USP/Ribeirão Preto.
