BIOGRAPHY

With European studies, Miguéz returned to Brazil when he was 21 years old, having studied violin with Nicolau Medina Ribas, and harmony and composition with Giovanni Franchini. He was a partner of Arthur Napoleão & Miguez, a firm that sold pianos, published scores, owned a concert venue and published a magazine, Revista Musical e de Belas Artes. Lived in Brussels, Belgium, between 1882 and 1884, and, on his return to Brazil, founded an Arts Center, which aimed at propagating the music of Richard Wagner and of composers to the modern aesthetics of the time. Miguéz was one of the founders and director of the Rio de Janeiro National Music Institute until his death. He was also a conductor, teacher, orchestrator and restorer of the scores of important composers such as José Maurício Nunes Garcia and Marcos Portugal. He is the Patron of Brazilian Music Academy´s chair No. 23.
